I completely enjoyed Cory's vision of the future. I read this book on my laptop in my spare time over the course of 3 or 4 days and I couldn't get it out of my mind. I often start books and then put them down for weeks before I have time to finish (or even continue)them, this one was too gripping for any of that.

Well worth the time. I'll be looking for more from this up and coming author.

This is science fiction that goes off the beaten path in some ways. The author describes a future social organization that is a kind of anarchism, with people's social worth defined by how much society respects their contributions. The story is set in Disneyworld, which has been taken over by cliques of enthusiasts, and the plot revolves around the question of how much to modernize the park to use virtual reality technology. More broadly, the book is about how people can define themselves as individuals when the human brain can be fiddled with directly. Doctorow's style is very snappy and fun to read. I felt, however, that by the time I got to the end of the book, I wasn't quite satisfied with where it had taken me. I think part of the problem is that, like a lot of recent SF, it sets up a future in which it's not plausible that humans would be recognizably human, but then goes ahead and has them act like humans.
